Rice Flakes (230g) by Kirin
Rice flakes are a variety of pasta or noodle made from a mixture of rice flour and water. Their preparation involves the par boiling of rice grains to get them soft enough to be shaped, thereafter the rice paste is rolled and flattened into flat sheets and left to dry. Once the sheets have completely dried, they are then cut into small squares, rectangles or triangles to form rice flakes!
Many Asian recipes incorporate rice flakes into their ingredients base and if you wish to broaden your cooking horizons and skills, there is no better brand to trust than Kirin. Kirin is one of the leading producers and exporters of rice and rice based products from Thailand. Now available in a 230g packet, Kirin’s rice flakes can be used to create some of the most delicious Asian dishes, or you can even just add them to your own cooked meals! Rice flakes are especially popular for the health conscious or for vegetarians and since they are made from pure rice flour and water, they contain no gluten, no egg, are extremely low in fat and salt and contain all the healthy vitamins and minerals of rice, such as iron, calcium, Riboflavin and Vitamin B1.
So how do the Thai use rice flakes? They are most commonly incorporated into fried rice noodle dishes such as Pad Kee Mao: a dish prepared with broad rice noodles, meat or tofu, bean sprouts and various seasonings including chili and basil, giving it a robust and fiery flavor. Rice flakes are also popularly used in Pad Thai (one of Thailand’s national dishes) made from a combination of rice flakes, tamarind juice, eggs, red chili pepper, lime, peanuts, fish sauce, bean sprouts and a choice of either seafood, chicken, beef or tofu.
To prepare Kirin brand rice flakes, pre-soak in warm water for approximately 40 minutes to an hour. When they achieve the desired softness, drain them and then add to your cooked sauce.
